Two medical officers of the 37 Military Hospital have been subpoenaed by the Attorney General's Department and are expected to give evidence in the Thomas Osei case on June 12.
Thomas Osei is standing trial for driving his Mercedes Benz car into the Presidential convoy of President Kufuor last year, near the Opeibea House, Accra. The President however escaped unhurt.
The two, whose names are yet to be made public, were expected yesterday to give evidence in court but failed to turn up.
The prosecutor, Edward Agyemang Doudu, a Principal State Attorney, explained to the court that the doctors could not come to court because one was on leave and has therefore not been served with the subpoena, whiles the other doctor claimed he received the subpoena in the morning of the court sitting.
This submission attracted the displeasure of the judge who told the prosecution that the subpoena should have been served in reasonable time. He wondered why the prosecution is delaying the case.
Mr Agyemang Doudu pointed out that the subpoena was served on the hospital authorities on Monday but the doctor claimed it was given to him just yesterday morning.
The two doctors treated Rev King Joe Osei Kufuor and Emmanuel Osafo Addo, the President's driver, on the day of the accident and are expected to submit their medical reports into evidence. They will also explain to the court the injuries the victims sustained, how they treated them and their findings.
Thomas Osei, 5, a businessman has been charged with five counts of motor traffic offences and use of narcotic drugs. The offence of failing to change ownership of vehicle has been dropped.
The charges include dangerous driving, negligently causing harm, driving under the influence of alcohol, failing to give way to Presidential siren and the use of narcotic drugs.
Osei has pleaded not guilty to all the charges leveled against him and has since been in police custody.
