The Parliamentary Caucus of the PNC has stated that the change that most of the opposition parties campaigned for and identified to be in Ghana"s interest could not be delivered by the NDC.
The group has therefore publicly declared their endorsement of Nana Akufo-Addo's candidature for the December 28 presidential run-off.
Addressing media personnel in Accra yesterday, the Parliamentarians of the PNC, namely, Bayirga Hurana, David Appasera, and Moses Dani Baah, stressed that they had not been convinced that the NDC offers the kind of change that will fast forward Ghana"s development.
According to them, the question that voters should be asking is why unlike in 2000, the other opposition parties have not thrown their weight behind the opposition party in the run-off, but are rather supporting the candidate of the ruling party.
They indicated that they have studied the visions of the two men contesting for the presidency, compared the performance records in government of their parties, and looked at the historical relationship between them and their parties to inform their decision to back the NPP.
"We have all been witnesses to the emergency social relief programme of the NPP; the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty programme, which is changing lives in the three northern regions especially; the free medical care for pregnant women; the microfinance and small loans scheme; and the free Metro Bus ride for school children,” they pointed out.
The group pledged to campaign for Nana Akufo-Addo in their respective regions.
They said they were impressed with Nana Akufo-Addo’s discipline to maintain an issue based campaign, in spite of all the provocations that have been thrown his way. "We believe he has shown strong moral character and mature political leadership,” they asserted.
Another reason the group cited for supporting Nana Akufo-Addo was his deep and heartfelt commitment to take bold decisive steps to close the development gap between the north and the south of Ghana. According to them, this was the dream of the colonial leaders, which began in 1953.
They said no government had been able to articulate such a clear, exceptional programme for the development of the north as Nana Akufo-Addo has done and which they believe he would put into action if elected president.
The group noted that the $1 billion Northern Development Fund, to be managed by a Northern Development Authority, which Nana Akufo-Addo has promised to set up within the first six months of his government, is welcome news for the people of the north and “we are ready to give that vision our total support and we will do our utmost to help him make this vision a reality”.
To them, the first step to achieve this vision is within their hands, and that is to elect Nana Akufo-Addo as president.
The PNC will then devote itself to providing the critical, objective support to ensure that he delivers on this promise and overcomes any hurdles in his way
“We are ready to offer him all the critical and objective support that he will need to push forward his bold vision to bring back the 'can do spirit’ of the Ghanaian and finally see us make a serious attempt at moving from our third world status to first world status as dreamt by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah and Dr Hilla Limann,” they said.
