The personal driver of His Honour, Judge Kofi Nyanteh Akuffo, a Circuit Court judge in Nsuta, a suburb of Kumasi, was on Sunday murdered by robbers.
The deceased, Bashiru Mohammed, 23, who was also a taxi driver, was found dead tied to a tree in the bush by a search party around 2pm. Briefing The Statesman on phone, ASP Abdullah Iddrisu, Municipal Police Commander, said the deceased was hired by two young men on March 29 around 12:30pm to transport them to Boanim. He said the deceased never returned and this raised concerns.
ASP Iddrisu said a report was lodged at the Nsuta Police Station on Monday and wire information was sent to all the police stations in the region.
He disclosed that the police received information through their regional CID that a man named Daniel Domfeh, 28, has been arrested in possession of the decease's taxi cab number AS 275-09.
According to him, upon interrogation Daniel Domfeh, now a suspect in the case claimed that somebody (name withheld for security reasons) gave it to him for repairs.
The Municipal Police Commander said a search party from Nsuta found Bashiru's body around 2pm between Mprim and Boanim. He said the body was found with the whole face, legs and hands of the decease tied with cellotape and also tied to a tree.
The matter was then reported to the police, who went to the scene to take pictures and evidence and later sent the body to the Mampong Municipal Government Hospital for autopsy. He said investigations are ongoing.
An uncle of the deceased, Abdul Aziz "Zito”, told The Statesman that the body of his nephew was released to the family yesterday, Wednesday April 1. He said Bashiru has since been buried but the family is making arrangements for his funeral rites later.
Mr Aziz "Zito” told this paper that he bought the car for his nephew. According to him, the family became concerned when after 6pm on Sunday Bashiru had not returned from work. He said when the deceased's mobile phone was called it was also switched off.
“We became alarmed because it is unlike him, he always returns home before 6pm,” he added. He said the family members went to see the Circuit Court judge to enquire whether he has seen the decease but it yielded no fruit as the judge had not seen him that day.
Mr Aziz “Zito” said it was after these attempts that a report was lodged at the Mampong Police Station.
Attempts to get the Circuit Court judge to comment on the murder proved futile. However, sources close to him told The Statesman that the judge was devastated by the incident and hopes that the police investigate the matter thoroughly and bring the suspects to speedy justice.
