The Electoral Commissioner, Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, has stated that votes are godly and men of God must stand up for its sanctity.
Speaking at a colourful award ceremony by the Royal House Chapel International to honour him for the role he played in the country’s last elections, Dr Afari-Gyan appeal to religious based organizations to be keenly concerned about educating their members about elections. According to him, Ghana has opted for a democracy and so it is particularly important to make the electorate fully aware that their votes represent the will and choices of the people in the selection of their political leaders. He said votes represent the desires and aspirations of people as to what they want for themselves and their country. “Our democracy can grow and deepen in quality only if our people are fully aware of the true significance of their votes,” he observed.
Dr Afari-Gyan pointed out that a person who really knows what his votes stands for; will not just drop a ballot paper into a ballot box without thinking about the import, will not sell his vote for a pittance, will not prevent other qualified persons from voting, and will not tamper with the votes cast at an election.
The Electoral Commissioner expressed surprise at the award being given him because “in the line of our work we don’t usually receive open praise.
As part of the award, Dr Afari-Gyan received a cash of $5000, a plaque with his name emboss in gold, another $1000 paid into his account annually when he retires till he dies, and a citation. The church also confers on him the title, dignity and all the privileges of “Apostle of Integrity”.
According to the Royal House Chapel International citation, during the most trying moments in the history of Ghana, Dr Afari-Gyan showed conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, calmingly disregarding his own critical conditions to complete this all important mission. It states your spirit of self sacrifice in the service our dear nation, was an outstanding example of bravery under fire and a hero to many, worthy of emulation by all.
“It is indeed a fitting endorsement of Royal House Chapel International’s appreciation of your exalted achievement and extraordinary contributions towards Ghana’s democracy, in consonance with Royal House Chapel International’s charter of touching its generation with the power of God and support for exhorting the principles of good governance, a vital ingredient in governing God’s people,” the citation extolled.
