After weeks of busy planning and extensive consultations, the Convention People’s Party has finally launched its plans for celebration of the Kwame Nkrumah Centenary. The National Chairman of CPP, Ladi Nylander confirmed this yesterday when he thanked the Chairman of the Centenary Planning Committee, Kojo Armah for their report which he accepted.
According to a press release issued by the party in Accra yesterday, the CPP plan a variety of exciting and educational events that will be a fitting memory of the enormous contributions of their founding father Dr. Kwame Nkrumah who led Ghana to independence and served first as Prime Minister, then President until 1966.
The CPP aims to make the centenary celebration a time for reflection on Kwame Nkrumah’s life and its impact on our nation and continent. But more importantly key events of the celebrations will signal to the youth of today, the relevance of Kwame Nkrumah’s message of selfless dedication in the pursuit of prosperity and national unity for Ghana and African people’s at large, according to the release.
Highlights of the year long Centenary celebrations include: the 37th anniversary of the death of the Osagyefo (27th April, 2009), the 60th anniversary of the founding of the CPP (12th June, 2009) and the Centenary anniversary (21st September 2009).
A number of educational, cultural, recreational and symbolic activities including school debates and quizzes will be organized to boost the event. There will be reprinting and procurement of Nkrumah’s books for wide distribution.
There will also be international football matches involving “local based national teams” and teams from countries chosen for both historical and geographical relevance to Ghana.
According to the press release, the CPP will seek to collaborate with any Government appointed Centenary Committee and institutions to ensure smooth running of our own planned activities and those of others. Funding and other facilities will be required and can be shared.
Other CPP events will include: Flag raising ceremony – at the mausoleum and at Nkroful (1st week in September), a gala dinner/dance – at a banquet to honour the founding father and elders of the party, and a photo exhibition on Nkrumah – Life and works.
The grand finale of the centenary celebrations will culminate in a Pilgrimage to Nkroful on Sunday 20th to 21 September. Cultural events will be organized in conjunction or collaboration with local interest groups – the Chiefs and Elders, the youth in those areas and a local planning team.
At this festival a planning committee will be launched to prepare for the proper funeral of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah that will coincide with the 40th anniversary of his death in 2012.
In order to take this centenary celebrations to the people, many events including the football matches, photo exhibitions and Lectures/Symposia will be decentralized to the Regions and where possible to the districts, the release said.
The CPP wishes to appeal to all members and well wishers to lend memorable pictures/portraits and artifacts of the period just preceding and during Ghana’s first republic for exhibition.
