No Holiday for June 4

The National Democratic Congress, in spite of the esteem, and sanctity with which its Founder Jerry John Rawlings holds June 4, may be wising up in leaving Rawlings to his ecstasy over the day Ghana was brought to a standstill in blood and gore in the name of ‘accountability’.
Checks by The Statesman at the Ministry of Interior indicate that June 4 remains a normal working day and not a statutory holiday. The general public is therefore expected to observe the day as such. According to the Ministry of Interior, June 4 was not among the days set aside as statutory holidays for the year 2009.
The statutory holidays for this year are New Year, January 1, Eid ul Ada, date to be determine by Chief Imam, Independence Day, March 6, Good Friday, April 10, Easter Monday, April 13, May Day, May 1, African Union Day, May 25, Republic Day, July 1, Eidul Fitre, to be determine by Chief Imam, Farmers Day, December 7, Christmas Day, December 25, and Boxing Day, December 26.
“Until Parliament with the assent of the President decided otherwise, these days remain the only statutory public holidays for the year 2009,” the Ministry observed.
However, a youth wing of the ruling party, the National Democratic Congress, has reiterated that it has appealed to President Mills’ administration to renew June 4 as a public holiday. The group based in Poloya fong of the Tamale Central Constituency says President Mills’ administration will do a great disservice to party faithful, if it fails to renew the June 4th Uprising celebration this year.
Mohammed Yahuza Ayuba Red, Chairman of the group in an interview with Citi News, explained that a renewal of June 4th Uprising celebration will serve as an honour to former President Rawlings for his “tremendous contribution towards Ghana’s socio-economic development.” Mohammed Yahuza Ayuba further made a passionate appeal to President John Mills to set a special day aside to “reflect on the good works” of the NDC founder.
Mohammed Yahuza Ayuba also challenged the NDC administration to live above reproach by fulfilling its campaign promises.
This, he said, will encourage the Ghanaian electorate to retain the National Democratic Congress in power come the 2012 elections.
The Chairman further impressed upon the three Members of Parliament in the Tamale Metropolis to lobby for productive ventures that will provide opportunities for the unemployed youth in their various communities.
