Ghana Fire Service wants every household to have fire extinguisher
The Ghana fire service in an attempt to curb the numerous fire outbreaks have declared its intention of amending the residence fire law, LI 1724, which have proved to be inadequate in solving modern day fire outbreak issues.
The existing law only requires fire personnel to enforce safety measures at areas where there are mass convergence such as churches, hotels, schools, night clubs and so forth, excluding domestic residences.
According to Mr. Timothy Afum, the Public Relations Officer of Operations, Ghana Fire Service, there have been a total of 2,429 fire cases recorded with 42% being domestic fires.
He pointed out that due to the rampant domestic fire outbreaks, it has become imperative for the law to be amended for the service to fully deliver its functions in the areas of domestic residence for lives to be saved. He said the Ghana Fire Service hitherto was just playing an advisory role as far as domestic residence adhering to safety measures is concerned.
Meanwhile the proposal is at the final stage to be presented to the Ministry of Interior who will in turn present it before parliament.
However, other laws such as the PNDCL Bush fire Act 229 of1990 which compels individuals who deliberately start bush fires to pay maximum of 100 cedis when brought to justice is also being proposed to parliament for amendment.
In an interview with Mr. Ransford Ago, a landlord, he said so long as they would implement it to protect properties he has no issue with it and for the fact that it is sometimes difficult for fire personnel to reach fire scenes on time, prevention to him is better than cure.
Mrs. Esther Atakora-Brix, also a landlady at Teshie lascala, said so long as the various safety measures such as fire extinguishers would be provided by government, she thinks its a good idea in that the family that got burnt in Kumasi last week has made her conscious of the effect of fire outbreaks.
Mr. Kwesi Zewu, said it will be a good idea so long as it is subsidized for low income earners to acquire so that there would be no excuse whatsoever on the part of house owners.
Mr. Afum said the service is positive that when the law is put in place the various fire outbreaks in homes would be a thing of the past since they have weighed all options.
