An Accra Regional Tribunal has remanded into custody Mohamadu Abubakar for possessing firearms without authority.
Abubakar was arrested on June 14, 2008 at about 4am at the Obetsebi Lamptey Circle by a joint police and military patrol team, led by Sergeant Victor Ahameh of the Police Headquarters.
According to the police prosecutor Chief Inspector Marjorie Otabil, the accused hails from Salaga in the Northern Region. She said on the said date the police cum military personnel were on a snap check duty at the Obetsebi Lamptey Circle in Accra when they intercepted a Nissan Pickup with registration number GR 3114 P with four occupants including the accused person on board.
Chief Inspector Otabil indicated that when the vehicle was searched, one locally made pistol with seven live cartridges were found in Mohamadu Abubakar's traveling bag. She told the court that the accused could not provide any document covering the gun and this led to his arrest and consequently sent to the regional CID, Accra for investigations.
She said during the investigations, the accused stated among other things that one Mustapha Muraf who lives in Kumasi gave him the pistol and the cartridges. He led the police to Kumasi to arrest the alleged Muraf but he escaped arrest on seeing the police. The accused was therefore charged with the offence.
