An armed robber standing trial before an Accra Circuit Court Monday told the court that even though he and his colleagues planned to rob, they did not achieve their aim when a police patrol team arrested them.
However, his accomplices denied knowledge of any planned robbery.
The court has therefore remanded them in prison custody to stand trial for armed robbery related charges.
The four, Tunde Abass, unemployed, 25; Albert Abbey, driver, 26; David Kwaku Tetteh, porter, 22; David Asare alias Kofi Duodu, porter, 22; and three others at large, are facing five counts of offences including conspiracy to rob and robbery.
Those on the run are Isaac Darko, alias Burger, and Nii Armah, alias Sugar.
Earlier on, all the four accused persons pleaded guilty with explanation on count one (the conspiracy charge), but not guilty for the remaining four counts of robbery.
However, from the explanations of Albert Abbey, David Kwaku Tetteh, and David Asare, alias Kofi Duodu, on count one, the court changed their pleas from guilty with explanation to not guilty for the case to go into trial and be decided on merits. Tunde Abass was however convicted on his own plea on count one.
The facts of the case as presented to the court by ASP Agyemang were that at 8pm on July 17, 2008, the complainant, Sampson Fiah, driver of a KIA Pride taxi cab with registration number GW3351X, was on his usual rounds when Isaac Darko Wellington and Nii Armah, both at large, and Albert Abbey stopped and hired him from Achimota to Sakaman.
On reaching a spot the three men told the driver to stop and as soon as he did they attacked him, inflicting deep lacerations on his skull, with swollen eye lids and jaws. The three robbed his KIA Pride taxi cab.
The three were later joined by Tunde Abass and Sugar, who is at large. The accused persons used the KIA Pride taxi cab to attack Audrey Barbara Essilfie and robbed her Mercedes saloon car with registration number GW1298U and five assorted mobile phones valued at GH¢1,030.00.
After robbing the Mercedes saloon car the accused persons abandoned the KIA Pride taxi cab. They used the Mercedes saloon car to rob a Mitsubishi pick-up number GV 323 T, driven by Emmanuel Doe.
The accused persons again abandoned the Mercedes saloon car at Laterbiokorshie, and used the Mitsubishi pick-up to rob an Audi saloon car with registration number GW 2422W, Sony video camera value US$6,000.00, two mobile phones value US$200.00 and a file containing personal document belonging to Nii Armah Addey.
The accused persons later abandoned the Audi saloon car around Central University at Mataheko.
According to the police prosecution, having succeeded in robbing the four vehicles and other items, the accused persons went in for their own Opel Astra taxi cab with registration number GR3613X with which they wanted to escape arrest. But in their bid to escape from a police patrol team, who had received a tip-off, they were intercepted at a spot near Radio Gold.
The police engaged the accused persons in a shootout but they managed to get out from the taxi cab and took to their heels. With the support of the neighbourhood, Tunde Abass and Albert Abbey were arrested.
Later, residents of Laterbiokorshie arrested David.
