The Executive Director of the Ghana Tourist Board, Martin Mireku, has disclosed that all is set for the 8th National Tourism Awards scheduled for August 2 at the Banquette Hall, Accra.
Reiterating the objectives of the awards at a press briefing yesterday, the GTB boss indicated that it was to reward excellence and professionalism in the competitive tourism business environment.
The National Tourism Awards represent the highest accolade for service providers in Ghana. It affords an opportunity to celebrate excellence and professionalism in the tourism industry. It is a biennial event organised by the GTB.
This year's ceremony has been repackaged, making it different from those held in the previous years, and also to reflect the realities of modern day events. Instead of the usual 11 awards - ten regional and one national, this time round three zonal awards were held and would be climaxed by the national event on Saturday.
The three northern regions represented Zone One whilst Ashanti, Brong Ahafo and Eastern Regions form Zone Two. Zone Three comprised Western, Central, Greater Accra and Volta Regions.
According to Mireku, over 500 people, including Ministers of State, the sector Minister, Members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Industry and Tourism, the Diplomatic Corps, Municipal Chief Executives, Chiefs and other dignitaries, are expected to grace the occasion.
Martin Mireku said in all, 32 awards would be given out on both competitive and honorary categories. However, Mireku disclosed that there was no nomination for 4-5 Star Accommodation Establishments of the Year category because all the Hotels in Ghana that fall within that category did not meet the criteria set by the juries.
The seven-member jury for the National Tourism Awards was drawn from academia, representatives of the Association of Ghana Industries, Ghana Tourist Board, Ghana Institute of Marketing and the Ghana Bar Association.
The criteria that cut across some of the categories were that the facility should have ideal location, excellent facilities and services, excellent cuisine, interesting sporting and other recreational facilities, fulfillment of all statutory obligations such as SSNIT Contribution and VAT returns, professional management and qualified staff, good maintenance, high cleaning standard and above all, good customer services.
