On October 15-16, 2006, the world will unite in reminding their governments, that promises to achieve the Millennium Development Goals must be kept.
The purpose of the action, is to raise awareness on the Millennium Development Goals, and to publicly demonstrate to policy makers, the growing global support for the eradication of poverty.
Every day, it is believed that 24,000 people die from hunger, more than 100 million children, are denied the chance to go to school, 1.1 billion people, have to drink polluted water and 8,200 people die due to HIV/AIDS.
'Stand Up', is an initiative designed to coincide with the Global Call to Action against Poverty, month of global mobilisations, around the international day for the eradication of poverty.
In Ghana, the Stand Up event is being organised by Aid Afrique, a non-profit organisation.
Speaking to The Statesman, in an interview in Accra, the Project Coordinator, Aid Afrique, Mohammed Abubakar Bank, disclosed that more than 1000 people are expected to be mobilised to take part in the event.
He said, activities lined up for the event include a debate on the theme: "Is illiteracy ignorance?" for literacy students and primary school teachers, paintings by orphans, and vulnerable children, and a football match.
According to him, apart from the few financial set backs facing the organisation, everything is set for the event to take place as scheduled.
