7 years in hard labour for stealing teacher's car

Unemployed Agba Bismarck Agbeko Kwasi Kwateku, alias Away, was on Monday, sentenced to 7 years imprisonment, with hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court for stealing an Audi Saloon car with registration number GR 4908 P.
The car belongs to Kwasi Ansu Kyeremeh, a lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon.
The accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced on his plea.
The Prosecuting Officer, J K Ansah, told the court, that on September 14, 2006, at about 8:10am the complainant, a lecturer at the School of Communication Studies, University of Ghana, parked his car in front of his bungalow at Little Legon, on the University campus. He left the key in the ignition and the engine running.
He said the accused, a resident of Christian Village, near Accra, was loitering around the vicinity and on seeing the complainant entering his bungalow, took advantage of the situation, by jumping into the vehicle and driving off.
The court was told, that the accused person later run the car into a VW Beetle saloon, with registration number GT 1316 D, causing damage to both cars. This led to his immediate arrest and was escorted to the Legon Police Station.
In another development, an 18 year old student, Eureka Ege, was fined ¢300,000 and in default will spend 3 months in prison for collaborating with Jessy Kumorji (second accused) to defraud a business centre operator of ¢8m with the pretext of supplying her with an Areeba transfer chip.
According to the story, the accused persons drove the complainant in a Toyota Camry saloon car, with registration number ER 1444 W, to the offices of Areeba at Osu where they asked the complainant to wait in the car whilst they purchased the transfer chip. The complainant, however, after waiting for some time, decided to follow up. On returning to the vehicle, she caught one of the accused trying to drive the car away.
She raised an alarm, and with the help of a passer by managed to seize the ignition key of the car.The accused, however, managed to escape.
The complainant reported the case to the Police and the vehicle was driven to the Police Headquarters, where it was impounded for investigation.
On September 5, 2006, the complainant spotted one of the accused, Eureka Ege, around the Police Headquarters and informed the Police who arrested him for investigations and later charged him with the offence.
