A committee to determine the prices of tuna in the country was yesterday inaugurated by the Ministry of Fisheries in Accra.
The committee has been tasked to find a lasting solution to the pricing of tuna which has been a bone of contention between canneries and fishing companies in the country.
Speaking in an interview with The Statesman after the inauguration, the President of the Ghana Tuna Association and a member of the committee, John Farmer, applauded the Ministry of Fisheries for setting up the committee.
He noted that the formation of the committee will help in addressing the nagging issue of pricing which has always been the source of confusion between processors and producers. He said it will also bring an end to the accusations and counter accusations that normally occur between the two.
According to him, the stand of the producers on the issue of pricing is that there should be some level of consultation between the two parties whenever new prices were introduced. He said this has not been happening, adding that "processors have been coming out with low prices which do not conform to what goes on in other countries thereby compelling some producers to sell their products outside the country in order to meet their operational costs."
Members of the committee are Emmanuel Asante, Myrock Food Processing Company, Kwame Adomako, Ghana Agro Food Company, and Etienn Julien, Pioneer Food Cannery.
Other members include Samuel Boye Ayertey, Trust Allied Fishing Ventures, Lee Tae Yeol, World Marine Company, John Farmer, Ghana Tuna Association, and Miltiades Tackey, AFKO Fisheries.
The rest are Daniel Dugan, Emmanuel Quaye and Samuel Quartey, all officials from the Ministry of Fisheries. They have two weeks to present their report.
