Eleven victims of an assault case which occurred during the 2004 general elections in Yeji are accusing police of indifference in prosecuting their case.
Investigations and documents available to The Statesman indicate that no serious action has been taken to address the issue since it was reported two years ago.
In a letter dated February 1, 2005, to the Assistant Superintendent of Police in charge of Yeji-Pru District Police Command and copied to the Inspector General of Police and the Brong Ahafo Regional Commander among others, Nana Obiri Boahene and Associates, counsel for the victims, stated that on December 7, 2004, right after the general elections had ended and results were being collated, some alleged armed activists of the National Democratic Congress, attacked and randomly fired at gathered voters who were supporters and sympathisers of the New Patriotic Party.
The 11 victims, Kofi Acheampong, Eric Dapaa, Kwaku Apolo, Kwaku Nsiah, John Ahmed Kwame, Kwaku Abonkrah, Emmanuel Donkor, Abraham Asante, Kadri, Kuku and Kwame, all in the Pru Constituency, were among those attacked. Enquiries made in the letter about the state of investigations concerning the assault case received no response from the police.
In a second letter to the Yeji-Pru Police and copied to the Regional Commander, the Divisional Commander, the Constituency Chairman of the NPP, the IGP and the 11 victims, the lawyers accused the police of "not seriously pursing the matter, adding, "It is even learnt that, the troubleshooters have been going round boasting that as far as they were concerned they were untouchable".
The suspects are Adamu, a bicycle repairer, Garbon, a butcher, Sule, a mason and Lapauto, a coconut seller.
